Visa Worldwide is one of our clients who drives the topic of Design Thinking for Cashless Donations in Pro Bono School. This session provided social organisations with the opportunity to apply Visa’s Design Thinking methodology to create potential donor journeys using cashless technologies.
Background:
The objective of the VISA Pro Bono School on Cashless Donations is to deep dive into the donor profile, mapping out donor journeys using a Design Thinking methodology, and spark ideas to increase funds raised through contactless means.
The session started with a tour of the VISA innovation centre, to introduce participants to the payments landscape and the various benefits of going cashless.

It was then followed by a One-to-Many training on Design Thinking and Cashless Trends, to introduce participants to the industry best practices. After the training, participants were broken up into 1-to-1 consultation clinics with Visa volunteers. The clinics are especially relevant to non-profit organisations, as the consultation offers a deep-dive into the donor perspective; an important consideration for NPOs seeking to improve their donation systems through digital means.
The Gap:
Continual improvement upon cashless solutions for donations supports better donor journeys, and will likely increase donations for charities- this initiative was also in support of the National Council of Social Services project “Ka-Ching”; A donation tracking tool that automates and streamlines back-end donation tracking processes.
Outcome:
The 2018 run of the programme involved 22 Social Organisations and 22 VISA volunteers, across 2 sessions.
Some of the takeaways as shared by the participants was the understanding of how to employ a systematic approach to analysing problems, and what are some of the key considerations in analysing the needs from a donor’s point of view. Some of the key next steps cited was how these learnings could be applied to their future fund-raising efforts, a clear articulation of the action steps for better donor journeys, and an overall understanding of the tools and resources to leverage upon, to adopt or enhance the cashless payment gateway(s) of their websites.
